When looking for a high-security safe, you’ll see ratings like TL-30, TL-30x6, and TRTL-30x6. These are UL ratings (Underwriters Laboratories), which indicate how well a safe can resist a break-in attempt using tools or torches, and for how long.

What is a UL Rating?

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, an independent organization that rigorously tests safes for fire and burglary resistance. When a safe is UL-rated, it has passed strict evaluations for security and reliability. These ratings help both consumers and insurers understand how secure a safe really is.

TL-30 Safe

  • TL = Tool-Resistant

  • 30 = Withstands 30 minutes of attack

TL-30 safes are ideal for small businesses and larger businesses alike, cash-handling environments, and residential clients or homeowners storing high-value items like watches, documents, or precious metals. They also qualify for insurance coverage of up to $750,000.

TL-30x6 Safe

  • TL-30 = Same as TL-30

  • x6 = All six sides are protected

This safe offers the same 30-minute tool resistance as TL-30, but adds protection to all six sides, not just the door. Burglars often try to breach safes through the back or bottom, and TL-30x6 ensures there are no weak points.

This rating is especially beneficial for clients in high-risk areas, retail chains, or those seeking higher insurance coverage, up to $1.5 million in some cases.

TRTL-30x6 Safe

  • TR = Torch-Resistant

  • TL = Tool-Resistant

  • 30x6 = Resists tool and torch attacks for 30 minutes on all six sides

This is the highest standard for burglary protection. TRTL-30x6 safes resist advanced attacks involving cutting torches, thermal lances, and heavy-duty power tools. They're trusted by luxury retailers, pharmaceutical companies, banks, credit unions, and businesses storing millions in assets. Insurance coverage can reach $4.5 million.

Why UL Ratings Matter

UL-rated safes don’t just offer better security, they can save you money. Many insurance providers offer discounts or require UL ratings to cover valuable items. The higher the rating, the more peace of mind and financial benefit you’ll gain.

Whether you're securing personal heirlooms or commercial inventory, understanding safe ratings is key to making a smart investment. At Legion Safes, we specialize in UL-rated safes that are purpose-built for Canadian homes and businesses.
