TL-30x6 vs. TRTL-30x6: Is It Really a Fair Fight?

Legion ad comparing TL-30x6 and TRTL-30x6 safes on a dark background, with UL Listed badge and fiery sparks.

On paper, these two ratings look close. Both protect all six sides of the safe, both hold up for 30 minutes under attack, and both sit at the top of what most buyers ever need. But once you look at what each one is actually tested to resist, it's not as close a fight as the names suggest.

Here's the real difference, and who should be paying the premium for it.

Where They're Identical

Both TL-30x6 and TRTL-30x6 protect every side of the safe, not just the door. That matters because experienced burglars often go for the back, bottom, or sides rather than fighting through a reinforced door. Both ratings also hold up for a full 30 minutes against certified attack testing, are built with double glass relockers that shatter under attack and automatically engage additional locking bolts.

If you stopped reading there, you'd assume these are two versions of the same safe. They're not.

Where They Split: Torch Resistance

TL-30x6 is certified tool-resistant: drilling, prying, punching, and cutting attacks, on all six sides, for 30 minutes.

TRTL-30x6 adds something TL-30x6 was never built to stop: torch resistance. A TRTL-30x6 has been tested against a cutting torch capable of burning through steel, in addition to every tool attack a TL-30x6 resists. That's a fundamentally different threat model, and it's why the two ratings aren't really competing for the same buyer.

This is also where we're careful about the language: PolyCeramic Barrier Technology, which powers Legion's TL-30 and TL-30x6 lines, is a tool-resistant technology. Torch resistance is a separate engineering challenge handled by our TRTL-30x6 line, built with 50 HRC drill-resistant hard plates and heavy-duty machined hinges designed specifically to survive torch attacks.

The Cost of That Extra Protection

Insurance coverage tells the story clearly. A TL-30x6 reaches up to $1 million in coverage. A TRTL-30x6 reaches up to $4.5 million, more than four times as much.

That coverage gap reflects a real difference in what each safe is built to survive, and it comes with a real difference in price and weight. TRTL-30x6 models run from 1,155 to 5,744 lbs, heavier across the board than the TL-30x6 line, because torch resistance requires additional engineered material that tool resistance alone doesn't.

So, Who Actually Needs TRTL-30x6?

TRTL-30x6 is the standard for banks, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and luxury retailers, environments where a sophisticated attacker with access to a cutting torch is a realistic threat, and where the value stored justifies coverage in the millions. Legion's TRTL-30x6 line serves clients including the Canadian Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces.

TL-30x6 remains the right call for jewelry stores, pharmacies, and financial institutions where tool attacks are the realistic threat and $1 million in coverage matches what's actually on-site.

Is It a Fair Fight?

Not really, and it isn't supposed to be. TRTL-30x6 wins on protection every time, because it's engineered to stop a threat TL-30x6 was never designed for. The real question isn't which safe is "better." It's whether torch resistance is a threat you actually need to plan for. For most businesses, it isn't. For the ones that need it, nothing less will do.
